Kenneth Anger

Born 1927 in Santa Monica, USA – Lives and works in Palm Springs, USA

Kenneth Anger grew up in 1930s Hollywood. At age 7, he shot his first movie, using his father’s 16mm camera. In 1947, he made Fireworks, now rated as the American equivalent of the films of Genet and Cocteau. The latter urged the young filmmaker to relocate to Paris in the late 1940s. During his 4 years in Paris, Anger made Le jeune homme et la mort, written by Cocteau and featuring choreography by Roland Petit. Back in California, Anger made his masterpiece, Scorpio Rising, in 1963. In 1975, he released his famous book, Hollywood Babylon.

Since 1995, he has exhibited his Icons in the United States. He brought them to Europe for the first time in 1997, at galerie du jour agnès b. He returned to filmmaking in the early 2000s, with films such as Don’t Smoke That Cigarette and Anger Sees Red.
