Born 1944 in Como, Italy – Lives and works in Lucca, Italy, and Berlin, Germany
After a classical education, Massimo studied photography at the London College of Printing. He worked as a photojournalist for numerous agencies and magazines in Italy and Europe in the 1960s. His encounter with Report agency founder Simon Guttman was fundamental to his development as a photographer engaging with social issues. In the late 70s, his growing mistrust in the idea that photography had an absolute capacity to reproduce the subtleties of reality led him to move into filmmaking, shooting fiction projects and commercials. His connection with the still camera remained unbroken, however, and in the last ten years, he has developed an approach to photography as a form of contemporary artistic expression. His use of large format cameras enables him to shoot portraits that keep their distance while interacting with reality.
